Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…” – Lk 22:15

Jesus sat for Passover with His disciples before He was to be betrayed. He knew the infinite pain and suffering He was about to endure on the Cross; yet all He could say was how glad He was to eat the Passover meal with His disciples. Why? What was so important about this meal?

There is power in Communion. For Jesus and His disciples, it was the Passover; but for us, celebration of this meal is Communion. When we eat of the bread and drink of the cup, we remember that Jesus died on the Cross for our sin. We remember that by His stripes we are healed! We remember that He not only fulfilled the Old Covenant; He enacted a “new covenant in [His] blood, which is shed for [us]” (v 20)!

There was something about the Passover meal – Communion – that would strengthen Jesus to carry the Cross! He knew what He was about to face, but He “fervently desired” (v 15) to eat of the bread and drink of the cup before He faced it.

So, what are you facing? Don’t face it without Communion. Stop your routine this morning and take Communion. Drop by the bodega on your way home and pick up some matzo and grape juice. There is power in Communion! As you take it, you will be filled with the strength to endure whatever comes your way.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the strength to endure the impossible. Jesus didn’t back away from the Cross; and I refuse to back away from the obstacles facing me. With Your Holy Spirit – and with Communion – I am ready!
