Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die!” – Gen 30:1

Rachel asked Jacob for something only God could give her. She was fed up and frustrated that she didn’t have a child, so she yelled at Jacob: give me what I need now!

Rachel was filled with anxiety because she looked to her husband to supply something that only comes from God. The request was spot on; but the direction of the request was off. Are you placing any unrealistic or unfair demands on your loved ones? Are you asking them for anything they cannot realistically provide?

All good gifts things come from above (Jas 1:17). If we seek prosperity from our employer, happiness from our spouse, or peace from our government, we will be sorely disappointed. Only God can satisfy our deepest longings and our most urgent desires. So, ask Him!

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. – Phil 4:19

Prayer:

Father, help me to remember that You are the source of every blessing in this life. I don’t want to waste time barking up the wrong tree. Turn my heart back to You, in Jesus’ name!
