Day 175: Overwhelmed by Kindness

25 Jun, 2014

2 Kings 6:1-7:20

Acts 15:36-16:15

Psalm 142:1-7

Proverbs 17:24-25

CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“But he answered, ‘You shall not kill them. Would you kill those whom you have taken captive with your sword and your bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master'”(2 Kings 6:2). When Elisha led the Syrian army into the capital of Israel, the king of Israel wanted to kill them. After all, if he killed the entire army, how would the Syrians ever attack Israel again? But Elisha had another idea: overwhelm them with kindness. God had given the opposing army into their hands, so the people of Israel gave them a great feast! They set food and water before them, and then sent them home with full bellies. The Syrians were so impacted by that decision – to radically love an enemy – that they never bothered the people of Israel again!

Prayer:

Father, help me to overwhelm the people around me with compassion and kindness! Help me to love my enemies, and demonstrate the Gospel of Jesus Christ through my actions.
