Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. – Ps 42:5

David spoke to his soul. He encouraged himself. He reminded himself to hope in God, to believe in His word for the fulfillment of all His promises, and to praise until every single one of those promises came to pass.

David strengthened himself in the Lord. When you need encouragement, to whom do you turn? David turned to God first. Then, when he was refreshed, he encouraged himself. He was filled with God’s word! He praised God no matter what! He encouraged himself until he felt strong enough to go out and do everything God had called him to do.

Speaking happens out loud. Speak to your soul. Proclaim the word of God over your life until you feel refreshed. Encourage yourself! You don’t need someone else to give you a pep talk. You are filled with God’s Holy Spirit, and full of His love. You should be the most encouraging person you know!

Prayer:

Father, give me the strength to encourage myself. I am filled with Your Holy Spirit. I am full of Your word, and saturated in Your love. Help me to be encouraged, in Jesus’ name!
