Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Debate your case with your neighbor, and do not disclose the secret to another; lest he who hears it expose your shame, and your reputation be ruined. – Prov 25:9-10

Do you have a problem with someone? Take it straight to them. Don’t talk about it with someone else! Don’t gripe and complain behind their back. Have the tough conversation, and trust that God will make things right.

Sometimes we’re afraid to have tough conversations because we’re not sure what to say. Yet Jesus told His disciples, “…do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit” (Mk 13:11).

Sometimes we’re reluctant to have difficult conversations because we’re not sure what the ramifications will be! Yet Jesus cautioned His disciples with these words:

Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. – Matt 18:15

God loves reconciliation. He will protect your good relationships, and repair the bad ones; but we have to be faithful to say what He asks us to say.

Prayer:

Father, give me the strength and courage to have tough conversations. Give me the awareness to realize when offense has taken place, and go straight to that person! I will not back down from reconciliation, in Jesus’ name!
