Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. – 2 Tim 1:7

Fear is the opposite of faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb 11:1). We know we already have the promises outlined for us in the Word of God because we have our faith as our evidence. When we have faith, the things we hoped for will come to pass. Faith in the Word of God produces them!

Fear, then, is the dissolution of things hoped for. When we refuse to believe the Word of God and appropriate it for ourselves as God’s children, the promises outlined for us in the Word of God melt away.

We should be able to pray free from fear! We should be praying in partnership with the Holy Spirit; and why would One Person of the Trinity (the Holy Spirit) be afraid to make a request of another Person of the Trinity (God)?

Pray with power, knowing that your words carry the same creative power as God’s words. Pray with love, knowing that God loves you. Pray with a sound mind, knowing that God’s Holy Spirit will pray through you!

Prayer:

Father, I rebuke any fear I am feeling on a daily basis in the name of Jesus. I know that fear is not from you, so I don’t want it in my life.  Father, give me a spirit of power, and a spirit of love! Give me a sound mind!
