Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. – Prov 1:23

Do you find yourself scratching your head when you read Scripture? Do you ever read a passage again and again, but still get frustrated because you’re not sure exactly what God is saying?

Ask for help. Before you start to read, pray this: “God, I pray Your Holy Spirit would speak to me as I read, in Jesus’ name!” God’s promise is that He will “make [His] words known to you” (v 23). He has poured out His Spirit on “all flesh” (Joel 2:28). The Holy Spirit will illuminate Scripture like never before when you ask Him for help!

Jeremiah reminds us that having the Holy Spirit changes everything:

No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. – Jer 31:34

If you have the Holy Spirit, you have everything you need to know the word of God! Don’t let a lack of formal Biblical training intimidate you or keep you from loving God’s word. God created you to know Him, and He wants you to know His word!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for heavenly revelation. The best way to know You is through Your word; so as I read, I pray Your Holy Spirit would illuminate truth to me, and cause the words to jump off the page, in Jesus’ name!
