Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” – Num 14:19
The people wanted to stone Moses (v 10)! They wanted to get rid of him so they could pick a new leader who would take them back to Egypt. But Moses didn’t get upset; he prayed. Moses prayed that God would forgive their disobedience, even though the people wanted him dead!
Leading well means praying for the people God has given you to lead, even when they don’t deserve it. The mark of a mature Christian is making a decision to pray, even when everyone else wants to curse. Jesus told His disciples: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you” (Lk 6: 27-28). Will you make the decision to pray for others – no matter what – so that they might taste of God’s infinite forgiveness?
In return for my love they are my accusers, but I give myself to prayer. – Ps 109:4
Prayer:
Father, You have called me to lead others well. Strengthen me to pray for those who spitefully use me, in Jesus’ name! My job is to pray for the people I lead, no matter how they feel about me!
