Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying: “Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be like sheep which have no shepherd.” – Num 27:15-17
God had just told Moses that he was going to die: Moses would climb to the top of Mount Abarim to see into the Promised Land (v 12), but then he would be “gathered to [his] people” (v 13). Moses had led the people of Israel through the wilderness for almost forty years, and he wouldn’t even get to enter into the Promised Land with them! How unfair, right?! Yet Moses’ had one, and only one, concern: what would happen to God’s people?
This is the mark of true leadership. Moses’ final thought was for his people, and not for himself. Before he died, he wanted to ensure that God’s people would be shepherded well by his replacement. Moses could have been occupied with selfish concern. He could have complained to God that this just wasn’t fair! But instead, he remained selfless. He kept his eyes on God’s people, instead of himself; and he would be forever remembered for his faithfulness.
Prayer:
Father, make me a good leader. I want my heart to be for Your people, and not for myself. I pray the wellbeing of those around me would supersede concern for self, in Jesus’ name!
