Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. – Deut 8:2

God didn’t cause the wilderness; but He did refuse to let it go to waste.

The people of Israel were in the wilderness because of their own disobedience. The journey to the Promised Land was supposed to take eleven days; but instead it took forty years! But the good news is that God refused to let that time go to waste.

God led His people through the wilderness. God fed His people in the wilderness. God taught His people He was faithful, even when they were faithless! He tested them – i.e. He refined and strengthened them – to know what was in their heart, and to make them into the people He knew they could be!

God didn’t cause your wilderness; but He will refuse to let it go to waste. He will use it for your good, and you will come out better on the other side.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your faithfulness! I trust You in my wilderness. I will continue to look to You for hope and for joy: no matter what. I love You, and You are my God!
