Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it…A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out. – Lev 6:12-13

It was the priest’s responsibility to keep the fire burning; but it was the people’s responsibility to bring offerings to be burned.

It is your church’s job to provide an atmosphere where you can show up and praise God with all your heart. But it is every man and woman’s individual responsibility to make the decision: will I praise God with everything I’ve got?

When whole communities of people gather together to worship God with reckless abandon, whole cities will be changed for the better. Whole cities will set fire to nations, and nations will kindle a revival all over the world! But the revival God is waiting to see rests, in part, on your personal decision to make a praise offering to God.

Don’t just be a pew warmer. Make the decision to show up at church and offer everything you have to God. Let it all hang out, and watch the way your life – and your community – is transformed!

Prayer:

Father, I’m taking a big and bold step today. I’m going to praise you with my whole heart. Every time I show up to church, I’m going to be ready to go! I want the fire for worship and revival I carry to be contagious!

Day 48: The Perfect Church

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Wednesday, February 17th, 2016
Leviticus 4:1-5:19
Mark 2:13-3:6
Psalm 36:1-12
Proverbs 10:1-2
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1cOxd5w

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” – Mk 2:16

Do you spend time with people who are not committed Christians? Do you attend church with folks who don’t have all their stuff together? Is your sanctuary open to the worst among sinners?

Your church shouldn’t look perfect. There should be hurting people who come in search of wholeness. There should be sick people who come looking for healing. There should be sinners who come seeking forgiveness. And when they come hungry for the Gospel, God will meet them all with open arms.

We must abandon the Americanized view we have all adopted of a “perfect” church. Would it be nice to go to a church where everyone is healthy and wealthy, nobody is socially awkward, and everyone has all of life’s problems figured out? Of course! Would it feel safe? Of course! Would it be encouraging? Of course! But it wouldn’t be the Gospel.

Jesus sat with tax collectors and sinners. He reached out and healed the hurting and the broken. He fed the hungry, and lifted up the outcast and the oppressed. So too should we! It might get a little messy, but God’s house will be full of love.

When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” – Mk 2:17

Prayer:

Father, give me the courage to seek out the people around me who need Your love the most. Give me the boldness to invite everyone I meet to church: the sick, the needy, the homeless and the broken. I know Your Gospel can heal what no man can!

Day 47: The God Who Heals

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Tuesday, February 16th, 2016
Leviticus 1:1-3:17
Mark 1:29-2:12
Psalm 35:17-28
Proverbs 9:13-18

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” – Mk 1:41

A man with leprosy came to Jesus and asked Him for healing. This man had every right to wonder if Jesus was willing to heal him; there was no written testimony of the many signs and wonders Jesus performed. We, however, do not have the same excuse. We know that God is our Healer because of the written testimony He has left us in His word!

Jesus forever answered the question, “Is God willing to heal me?” with His response. He touched the leper, and settled the matter once and for all: “I am willing; be cleansed.” This response sets the precedent for any instance in which we need to know Jesus’ will for healing. Jesus was willing; and the leper was cleansed immediately.

God is Jehovah Rapha: the God Who Heals (Ex 15:26). Healing is not just something God does; it is Who He Is. Do you need healing? Declare healing over your body. God is willing to heal you! His will has not changed. He did it for this man with leprosy; and He will do it for you.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. – Heb 13:8

Prayer:

Father, thank You that You are my Healer! I believe that You are willing to heal me completely. I am going to praise and worship You in advance because I know my healing is coming!

Day 46: Enjoying God’s Presence

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Monday, February 15th, 2016
Exodus 39:1-40:38
Mark 1:1-28
Psalm 35:1-16
Proverbs 9:11-12
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1gK0OzQ

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates on the hem of the robe all around between the pomegranates… – Ex 39:25

Under the Old Covenant, the High Priest was instructed to wear bells on his robe. According to Jewish tradition, the High Priest would enter the Most Holy Place once per year to minister to God. If he made one single mistake in God’s presence – if he messed up even once – he would drop dead. If the other priests no longer heard the ringing of bells as the High Priest moved, they would know he was dead, and would pull him out of God’s presence using a rope tied around his waist.

Under our New Covenant of grace through Jesus Christ, the pressure is off! Instead of tip-toeing in God’s presence, Scripture now exhorts us to, “…come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb 4:16). Whereas Old Testament priests had to approach God with fear and trembling, we get to approach Him with advance assurance that we will be welcomed into His presence with open arms.

Thank God that because of the Cross, we no longer have to worry about messing up or making mistakes in His presence!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for our New Covenant of grace! I know I will no longer be held to a standard of perfection, but to a standard of grace. Jesus was perfect because You knew I never could be. He served as my Sacrifice, so that I can serve You without fear.

Day 45: Jesus Met Them

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Sunday, February 14th, 2016
Exodus 37:1-38:31
Matthew 28:1-20
Psalm 34:11-22
Proverbs 9:9-10
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1gBeCwm

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. – Matt 28:9

As they went to spread the Good News, Jesus met them! As we go out and proclaim the Gospel, Jesus will meet us! He will confirm our speech with signs, wonders and miracles following.

The implication of this verse is twofold. First, if you need an encounter with Jesus – if you need to meet Him – the way to make it happen is to go out and spread the Gospel! When you rush to tell other people the Good News that Jesus was raised from the dead and has conquered the grace, the resurrected Christ will meet you face to face.

Second, you never have to be afraid that if you boldly preach the Gospel, Jesus will fail to make Himself known. When we preach the Good News, Scripture promises that signs, miracles, and wonders will follow us!

“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” – Mk 16:17-18

Thank God we serve the risen Lord! Thank God He is always willing to meet us as we go out and do His work!

Prayer:

Father, thank You that You are always willing to meet me! Give me the boldness and confidence to go out and boldly proclaim the Good News – that You are raised from the dead – knowing that as I do, You will confirm my witness!

Day 44: Calling All Artists

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Saturday, February 13th, 2016
Exodus 35:10-36:38
Matthew 27:32-66
Psalm 34:1-10
Proverbs 9:7-8

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

All who are gifted artisans among you shall come and make all that the Lord has commanded… – Ex 35:10

God will use your skill set, no matter what your specialty. You don’t have to graduate from divinity school to be used by God. You don’t have to work for the church to make a difference! God’s promise is that when you bring whatever you have to the table, it is always enough. He will make good use of you, no matter who you are!

Bezalel and all the craftsmen knew exactly what needed to be done because they were filled with God’s Holy Spirit. They were experts in their fields, and God used their work for His glory, because they relied on the Holy Spirit for instruction and direction. God will call you to do His work, no matter what industry you are in!

He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry make…those who do every work and those who design artistic works. – Ex 35:35

Prayer:

Father, thank You for equipping me to do Your work. You are the Creator, and You made me creative in Your image. Help me to rely on Your Holy Spirit for direction on exactly what You have asked me to do!

Day 43: Sabbath Rest

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Friday, February 12th, 2016
Exodus 34:1-35:9
Matthew 27:15-31
Psalm 33:12-22
Proverbs 9:1-6
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1lxsdI8

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. – Ex 34:21

Rest is important. One of God’s first commandments to His people was to keep the Sabbath. In Exodus 35:2, Moses told the people of Israel that whoever did work on the Sabbath, “…shall be put to death.” The Sabbath was of the utmost importance then; and it still is now.

You need times of rest to function at peak capacity in times of stress. Under the Old Covenant, God’s people were invited into a day of rest. However, under our New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ, we are invited into a lifestyle of rest. We get to rest, knowing that God rescued us from the depth of our sin, charged the punishment we deserve to Jesus, and baptized us in His righteousness. We get to rest, knowing that when we die, we will see God face to face, and the words He speaks over us will be, “You are My beloved child, in whom I am well pleased!”

Make time for rest. The Sabbath was made for man; not man for the Sabbath (Mk 2:27). Ask God to help you carve out space for rest in your life – every day – so that you can be recharged, refreshed, and ready to do all things through Christ who strengthens you!

Prayer:

Father, remind me to rest. I know I need rest to function well. I know the way I received salvation is by resting in the finished work of the Cross. I don’t want to try and solve all my problems on my own anymore; I know that as I rest, You will work perfection through me!

Day 42: Up On the Mountain

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Thursday, February 11th, 2016
Exodus 32:1-33:23
Matthew 26:69-27:14
Psalm 33:1-11
Proverbs 8:33-36
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1kwwhue

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” – Ex 32:1

Moses needed time on the mountain with God. If Moses had not gone up on Mount Sinai to be alone with God, the people of Israel would have never received God’s commandments. If Moses had not gone up on Mount Sinai to be alone with God, the specific and intricate instructions God’s people needed to live according to their design would have never been properly communicated.

If you are a leader – in your church, in your family, or in any area of your life – this lesson is for you. Moses needed time alone with God; but the people all around him panicked as soon as he was gone. Moses needed time alone with God; but when the people of Israel didn’t see him, they rushed to try and fix things themselves.

You are like Moses. You need time alone with God. However, do not be surprised if you encounter resistance and sabotage. The people around you may wonder why you are enjoying personal time with God, instead of working or socializing. They may even rush to replace you, or criticize you for not being around more often.

But you need your time alone with God. It was on Mount Sinai – in God’s presence – that Moses received the instructions he needed to guide God’s people well. And it is in God’s presence that you will find the encouragement and refreshing you need to lead every day.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your presence! I know that everything I need is found in Your presence. Help me to rest and be recharged in personal times of prayer with You!

Day 41: He Calls You Friend

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Wednesday, February 10th, 2016
Exodus 30:11-31:18
Matthew 26:47-68
Psalm 32:1-11
Proverbs 8:27-32
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1eHJuyh

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Immediately [Judas] went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. – Matt 26:49-50

No matter what you’ve done, Jesus calls you friend. No matter what you’re planning to do, Jesus calls you friend. There is nothing you can do that is so big and ugly that it overshadows the love Jesus has for you!

Here was Judas, about to betray Jesus. He had followed Jesus, and Jesus had loved him with all His heart; yet Judas still fell into sin. But even as Judas was about to betray Jesus to His face, Jesus calls him “friend!”

God is for you. He loves you with everything He is, even in the depths of your sin. Because of the Cross of Jesus Christ, God’s love for you cannot be quenched. No matter what you have done, God calls you friend!

No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. – Jn 15:15

Prayer:

Father, thank You for calling me friend! I declare that the Cross of Jesus Christ is big enough to blot out all my sins: past, present and future. I am a friend of God!

Day 40: Burn It

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan
Tuesday, February 9th, 2016
Exodus 29:1-30:10
Matthew 26:14-46
Psalm 31:19-24
Proverbs 8:14-26
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/MBziel

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. But the flesh of the bull, with its skin and its offal, you shall burn with fire outside the camp… – Ex 29:13-14a

God is not interested in behavior modification; He wants heart transformation. Even as God instructs Moses to properly make an offering on the altar according to Old Covenant law, we see a foreshadowing of our New Covenant relationship with God.

The priests were instructed to take the fat – the richest and best part of the animal – and burn it on the altar. They were to also take the kidneys – a Biblical representation of the seat of our emotions and innermost desires – and burn them on the altar. God wanted the insides – the innermost parts – of the sacrificial animal offered up to Him. But all the outsides were to be taken outside the camp and burned with fire.

God doesn’t want your outsides; He wants your heart! His desire is not for empty outward demonstrations of affection, but for inward commitment and devotion to Him. How holy you appear to other people does not matter one bit; loving God with all your heart is His only desire!

Prayer:

Father, I give You my whole heart today, in Jesus’ name. I receive Jesus as Lord over my life, and I accept the heart transformation He died for me to have!
