Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. – 1 Sam 10:10

When the Spirit of God came upon Saul, he excelled. In 1 Sam 10:10, the “Spirit of God came upon” Saul and he began to prophesy. In 1 Sam 11:6, the “Spirit of God came upon Saul” and he led Israel to victory over the Ammonites.

In Hebrew, the word for “came upon” is tsalach, which means “to advance, prosper, make progress, success and be profitable” (Strong’s #H6743). The Holy Spirit empowers you to do impossible things. He advances you, and causes you to prosper! He pushes you into forward motion so you can make supernatural progress. He assures your success, and guarantees you will be profitable.

God’s Holy Spirit will work through you to do incredible things. Invite Him into your life – your work, your family and your church – and watch what He will do! If God is working through you, you will excel!

Prayer:

Father, I will rely on Your Holy Spirit for strength. You push me into victory when defeat seems like the only outcome. You give me success through every trial and tribulation. I trust You in Jesus’ name!

Day 130: Supernatural Decision Making

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. So the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed their voice, and make them a king.” – 1 Sam 8:21-22

This wasn’t Samuel’s decision; it was God’s. Samuel knew the people were asking him to choose a path that was against God’s will. So, instead of struggling through the decision himself, he kept it simple. He asked God what to do!

How many times in your life have you been torn between one choice and another: knowing that God asks you to do one thing, but your flesh cries out to do something else? Keep it simple! Ask God what to do. Are people in your life putting undue pressure on you to make a decision you’re not sure about? God will tell you what to do. Keep it simple, and let Him decide.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for being the best decision maker in the world. You are always right, and You always know what to do. I defer every decision to You, in Jesus’ name!!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. – 1 Sam 7:7

All the people of Israel had repented and turned their hearts to God. As they gathered together to worship God at a city called Mizpah, Israel’s enemies came up to start a war.

The enemy tries to attack when God’s people are in worship. Satan knows that if he can disrupt your worship, he can make you afraid. That is why the first thing he goes after when you hit a rough patch is your intimacy with God. Satan will do everything he can do convince you that God doesn’t love you, and doesn’t want to hear from you. But when you continue to worship no matter what your enemies are up to, God will deliver you!

Samuel cried out to God, even as the enemy approached. The people of Israel continued to worship, and God defeated their enemies (v 10). Protect your worship. Praise God in advance, knowing that your victory is secure. Keep your eyes on the Cross, and He will deliver you!

Prayer:

Father, I ask that You would protect my ability to worship. Help me to always lean on You, and worship You with every part of me. I know that when I worship You, my victory is secure!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

…while Samuel was lying down…the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, “Here I am!” So he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” – 1 Sam 3:3-5

1 Samuel 3 offers a training course in what it sounds like to hear from God. Samuel was lying down, falling asleep; but God called. His voice was not a thundering roar from Heaven, but rather a still, small voice that Samuel easily mistook for Eli. God is not a man; but He will speak to you in language you will understand.

God loves to speak to His servants at night! Samuel heard from God for the first time as he drifted off to sleep. David told God, “I remember You on my bed, [and] I meditate on You in the night watches” (Ps 63:6). Joseph heard from God five times in five different dreams in the first two chapters of the New Testament (see Matt 1:20, 2:12, 2:13, 2:19, 2:22). You don’t need to be awake and consciously praying to hear from God!

Ask God to speak to you while you are in bed. He may whisper to you as you drift off to sleep. He may show you His plans in a dream. He may wake you up in the middle of the night, and put something or someone on your heart so you can pray! He invites you to respond just like Samuel did: “Speak God, for Your servant hears!”

Prayer:

Father, make me receptive to Your voice at all hours of the day. I love hearing from You, and I want to hear You 24/7. Speak to me, and Your servant will listen!

Day 127: Specific Prayer

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan

John 5:1-23
Psalm 105:37-45
Proverbs 14:28-29

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” – Jn 5:6

What a silly question to ask! This man had suffered with his sickness for thirty eight years. Of course he wanted to be made well! But Jesus had a purpose in asking. He wanted the man to specifically identify what he needed, and confess his need to God. When the man answered Jesus, he was healed!

We see Jesus ask a similar question of Bartimaeus. In Mark 10, as Jesus walked by Bartimaeus on the road, he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (v 47). But Jesus didn’t simply see that he was blind, and give him sight. He stopped and asked Bartimaeus, “What do you want Me to do for you?” (v 51). When Bartimaeus replied, he was healed.

God rewards specific prayer. Yes, He already knows everything we need; but no, that doesn’t excuse us from asking. Asking builds relationship. Answering builds trust. Every miracle is birthed from a place of intimacy, as we learn to trust our Father in Heaven who created us for relationship with Him!

Prayer:

Father, help me to be specific in my prayers. When I have a need, give me the courage to cry out and confess my need to you! I know that when I get specific, my prayers get answered!

Day 126: Your Reputation

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan

John 4:43-54
Psalm 105:16-36

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before.” – Ruth 2:11

Ruth’s reputation preceded her! Everywhere she went, she was known as a woman of character and integrity. She did not have to try to build a noble reputation; she simply acted out of loyalty and God built a flawless reputation on her behalf. Ruth simply did the right thing, no matter the cost. God always saw, even when it felt like no one was watching.

If you build your own reputation, you have to maintain it; but if God builds your reputation for you, it will never fail.

Prayer:

Father, help me to follow Jesus Christ with my whole heart. I know that when I honor You, I won’t even have to worry about my reputation!

Day 125: The Purpose of Prophecy

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan

John 4:4-42
Psalm 105:1-15
Proverbs 14:25

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” – Jn 4:39

Jesus affirmed the Samaritan woman. He knew the depth of her sin, yet offered her salvation all the same. He refused to judge or condemn her; He simply spoke the truth out of love, and proved God cares about her more than she could ever imagine by telling her something only God could know. The end result was a woman who told her whole city about Jesus, and a whole city that came to salvation through Him.

Prophecy is important. Paul tells us to earnestly, “…desire spiritual gifts…especially that [we] may prophecy” (1 Cor 14:1). John assures us that ,”…he who is least in the Kingdom of God,” is a greater prophet than John the Baptist (Lk 7:28). All believers should exercise the gift of prophecy and live a prophetic lifestyle!

If Jesus had never prophesied to the Samaritan woman, her soul might never have been saved. Be bold. Share the words God gives you with the people who need to hear them. Someone’s salvation depends on your prophecy!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the beautiful gift of prophecy. Help me to be bold and assure people that You care about them more than they could ever know by sharing the things You put on my heart.

Day 124: Keep Fighting!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, “Shall I again draw near for battle against…Benjamin?” – Judges 20:23

The Israelites suffered defeat on day one of the battle. But they didn’t shy away from the fight, or turn away from God. They sought Him, and He answered. Keep fighting, God said.

Then they suffered defeat again on day two! Why couldn’t they win? They were clearly fighting against wicked people who were doing wicked things; a victory for Israel would mean glory for God. They sought God again, and He answered. Keep fighting, God said.

On the third day, God gave the Israelites a new battle plan. They ambushed their enemies; and just when their enemies thought they were winning, God struck them down!

Victory comes on the third day. When Jesus died on the Cross, Satan thought he was winning. But just when he thought the fight was over and death had won, Jesus rose from the grave. God defeated death, once and for all, as a promise that all our enemies will fall when we make the decision to just keep fighting.

Are you in the middle of a battle that’s lasting longer than you ever thought it could? Keep fighting! Seek God. He will give you a battle plan, and bring you into victory over your enemies. You are promised inevitable victory because of the Cross.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that victory is inevitable. Even when I am in the fight of my life, I know that Jesus died to give me life. I will stand on Your promises, in His name!

Day 123: Proving God Is Real

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan

John 3:1-21
Psalm 104:1-23
Proverbs 14:20-21

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” – John 3:2

Nicodemus knew Jesus was the Son of God because of the signs and wonders He performed. Do you want to prove God is real to the people around you? Pray for healing! Pray for deliverance. Pray the risky prayers you’re afraid to pray: those things that won’t happen unless God is real. When you step out in faith, God responds by fulfilling His promises!

God is waiting for a generation to rise up and “heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons” (Matt 10:8). All of creation “eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God” (Rom 8:19). Will you be the one to answer God’s call? Will you be the one to declare His word over creation so heaven can come to earth?

The people in your family, your workplace, and your city need to know God is real. If you pray for something only He can do, they will know He is God!

Prayer:

Father, I want to be a walking miracle factory. Give me strength and courage to pray for the miraculous. I know that when I pray, supernatural things happen in Jesus’ name!

Day 122: Water Into Wine

CityLight Church’s One Year Bible Reading Plan

John 2:1-25
Psalm 103:1-22
Proverbs 14:17-19
For full text click here: http://bit.ly/1rVsjfV

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. – Jn 2:11

Why was this Jesus’ first public miracle? Of all the things He could have done first, why would He choose to turn water into wine? Wasn’t there something more valuable He could have done with His time? Wasn’t there someone who needed healing, or a demon to be cast out?

Wine might seem like a small deal to us; but it was a big deal to the wedding hosts. Jesus cares about the details: no matter how big or how small. This wedding was important to Jesus because it was important to the people in His family. And as His disciples, you are His family.

There is no detail in your life that is too little to get God’s attention. There is no concern that moves you, that does not move God. Cast all your cares upon Him, “…for He cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7).

Prayer:

Father, thank You for treasuring every single detail in my life. There is nothing too small or insignificant for You. I will delight in You, because You delight in me!
