Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
We see two notable elements of the enemy’s strategy as Assyria approaches Jerusalem:
1) The enemy told God’s people they didn’t pray enough.
“But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?” – Is 36:7
The Assyrians tried to convince God’s people they had no right to trust in God, because they didn’t worship Him enough! The enemy will always try and get you to trust in your condition instead of your position. Don’t fall for it. You are a child of God – no matter how much you pray, and how often you worship. He will protect you because He is your Father, not because you earned His protection!
2) The enemy tried to get God’s people to settle.
…until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. – Is 36:17
The enemy will always tempt you with counterfeit happiness. He didn’t offer God’s people the right to stay in their own land; he offered them a counterfeit – a land that looked and felt like their own land. But a counterfeit is never the same as the real thing! Hold out for God’s promise. He is faithful to deliver everything He has spoken, in Jesus’ name!
Trust God, and never settle! Don’t let Satan steal the promises you get to stand on as a child of God.
Father, protect me from the lies of the enemy! I know You love me, no matter how much I pray. I know I don’t have to settle for partial fulfillment of Your promise; so help me to hold out for the whole thing!
