Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name… – John 1:12

Jesus gave you the right to become a child of God. Stand up for your right! Do not allow the enemy to convince you that anything can stand in the way of perfect communion with your Father. Do not allow anyone to tell you your past disqualifies you from adoption.

When you received Jesus as Lord over your life, He gave you the right to become a child of God. That right is irrefutable and irrevocable. Your past cannot cancel your adoption! God loves you because you are His child: no matter who you are, where you’re from, or what you’ve done!

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” – Rom 8:15

Prayer:

Father, thank You for adopting me! I am a child of God, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. – Lk 24:45

Before the disciples could fully comprehend the Scriptures, Jesus had to open their understanding. He had to show them that every word, sentence, and phrase in Scripture ultimately points to Him. He had to explain that every Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled in His death, burial and Resurrection. If He hadn’t showed them, they never would have properly understood!

Before you open your Bible, pray. Pray God would open your understanding and illuminate Biblical truth to you. Pray His Holy Spirit would move as you read, and highlight the verses you need to keep close to your heart. Pray that your time reading God’s word would draw you closer to Jesus than ever before! He will give you eyes to see, and ears to hear; but you must ask for your senses to be opened first!

Prayer:

Father, give me a deep & thorough understanding of Scripture. Help me to see how every phrase points to Jesus. Open my eyes that I would see Your will; and open my ears that I would hear Your voice, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. – Lk 23:56

Jesus gave up His life on a Friday: the day before the Sabbath. Do you know what the disciples did all day Saturday? They rested. They were legally bound under Levitical Law to rest – to refrain from doing any work, and to “hold their peace.”[1]

God wanted the disciples to rest. He didn’t want them to panic – to run around trying to figure out what they should do! He didn’t want them working – because Jesus does all the work when we simply rest.

When we rest, He can rise. When we throw our hands up, He can hand blessings down. When we admit how helpless we are in our own strength, He can showcase His strength through us!

Prayer:

Father, help me to rest. When things seem like they can’t get any worse, force me to rest. Make me drop my striving, and pick up Your perfect peace!

[1] The Greek word for “rest” is hesuchazo, which means to cease from labor, to say nothing, and to hold one’s peace (Strong’s #2270).

Day 117: Is It OK to Be Scared?

The Daily Word: Thursday, April 27th, 2017

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“But if you are afraid…, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” – Judges 7:10-11a

God promised Gideon victory. But Gideon still had some questions. Did God pick the wrong guy? Was victory really guaranteed?

God already knew Gideon was afraid to go into battle. God didn’t rebuke Gideon for his fear! He offered an opportunity for Gideon to build the confidence he needed to win the battle. He told him to go down into the enemy’s camp and listen to how they feared Israel. Even the enemy didn’t think he would beat Gideon!

God is not afraid of your fear. Confess your fear to God, and He will give you the confidence you need!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for tolerating my fear. Thank You that life with You means I never have to be afraid. Help me to live for You – without fear – in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, that the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel… – Judges 6:7-8

The people wanted a warrior! But God sent them a prophet. Why would He do that? They had a battle to win!

Prophecy is not just for “fun.” Accurate words from the Lord allow you to adhere to His will; and when you act out of steadfast obedience to Him, you cannot fail!

Do not despise the power of prophecy. When you have a word from God, you can do anything.

Prayer:

Father, surround me with prophetic people! Give me powerful, accurate words along with the strength to abide by them!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Barak told her, “I will go, but only if you go with me.” “Very well,” she replied, “I will go with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman.” – Judges 4:8-9

Barak didn’t have the courage to do what God called him to do. But Deborah did! So when the men were too scared to go and fight, she led the charge. She told Barak how many troops to bring, and she signaled when God wanted Israel to fight. Under Deborah’s leadership, God’s army killed all the enemy troops: “Not a single one was left alive (Judges 4:16).

Thank God for Deborah! Thank God for strong women in our churches who promote God’s agenda. Thank God for women of God who stop at nothing for victory!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the strong women of God in my life. Thank You for my mother, and thank You for my wife! Surround me with strong women of God in my life, and remind me to pray for and appreciate them, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. – Ps 92:4

When we do God’s work, there are benefits. First, He will make us glad – happy and fulfilled. Second, we will triumph – experience victory – as we set out to do the work He has given us to complete.

God made each and every one of us to do something specific and unique. He designed us with a purpose. If we want to find happiness, we have to take time to discover that purpose. If we want to achieve success, we have to know what He has put us here to do!

Are you working on what God has blessed? Or are you asking Him to bless your work?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for blessing Your work. Use my hands, my body, and my life, as You see fit, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, “Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?” – Judges 1:1

God had already given them the land! But the people of Israel still had to go up and fight. The land was theirs! But they still had to go up and take it.

What has God promised you? Just because God promises you something doesn’t mean it’s going to drop into your lap. Just because He’s given you a destiny doesn’t mean it’s going to effortlessly unfold with no work on your part! God doesn’t need your permission to do what He wants to do; but He does desire your partnership.

The good news is: the battle is already won. We don’t fight for victory; we fight from victory. Are you willing to fight for the promises of God?

Prayer:

Father, fill me with boldness to fight for Your promises! You have spoken great things over me. I want to contend for them all, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. – Prov 13:20

With whom are you walking? Do you want to be wise? Walk with wise men. Do you want to be successful? Walk with successful women. Do you want to know whom you’ll be like? Look at the people you hang out with!

We become like those with whom we spend time. That means that if we want to hear from God, we should get around people who hear from Him. If we want to pray bold and effective prayers, we should get around people with an awesome prayer life! God put anointed men and women in your life so you can learn from them!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for putting anointed men and women of God in my life! Help me to learn everything I can from them, in Jesus’ name.

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn from following the Lord this day, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for grain offerings, or for sacrifices, besides the altar of the Lord our God which is before His tabernacle.” – Josh 22:29

The Israelites jumped to conclusions. They assumed their brothers and sisters across the river were in rebellion. They assembled their armies and went out to meet them, ready to fight! But their brothers and sisters were actually building a memorial to the Lord. Awkward…

We can do serious damage if we judge someone before hearing their side of the story. Pray before you act! Listen before you speak. Receive the Lord’s perfect peace, and He will guide you into all things.

Prayer:

Father, make me patient! Make me kind. Help me to keep from jumping to conclusions. Encourage me to give other people the benefit of the doubt! I trust You to show me what to do, and what to say: at all times.
