Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind… – Job 38:1

Job’s life was a whirlwind. Everything was taken from him in the blink of an eye. With his head still spinning, his friends arrived to comfort him, but ended up criticizing him instead. Job didn’t know whom to believe! But God spoke to him in that place.

Is your life a whirlwind? God will speak to you there! The key is knowing His voice before the whirlwind begins!

Quiet time in prayer is good; but don’t restrict God to speaking in your prayer closet. Don’t limit Him to speaking when you’re “ready” to hear. He speaks at a moment’s notice. Will you be ready for what He has to say?

Prayer:

Father, my life is crazy. I have so much going on that sometimes my head just spins! But I know You speak out of the whirlwind. I need to hear You! Make me receptive to Your voice, in Jesus’ name.

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed… – 2 Cor 4:8-9

Jesus never promised life with Him would be easy; but He did promise it would be worth it. No matter what comes our way, we press forward knowing we cannot be defeated. Jesus is victorious – He defeated death, and conquered the grave – and He lives in you!

You might face pressure in life; but you cannot be crushed. You might be confused at times; but God will never leave you in despair, unsure of what to do next. You may have to deal with suffering; but God will never forget you. You may fall; but every stumble is an invitation to get back up on your feet, stronger and wiser than ever.

Whatever you are going through: keep going! The same Holy Spirit who got Jesus to the Cross lives in you. You will not – you cannot – be defeated.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for making me undefeatable! I know Jesus already overcame every obstacle I could ever face. Thank You for filling me with Your Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“I have made a covenant with my eyes…” – Job 31:1

Covenant starts with the eyes. Your heart then “walks after your eyes” (v 7). What you look at determines what you love. Where your eyes go, your heart will follow!

The best way to stay on the path God has for you is to keep your eyes on Jesus. Don’t let your eyes settle on anything or anyone else! A glance is so much more than just a glance. Are you married? Keep your eyes on your spouse. Are you in debt? Keep your eyes on God’s promise that you will “lend and not borrow” (Deut 28:12). Are you believing for God’s best for your life? Fix your eyes on Jesus and “feed on His faithfulness” (Ps 37:3)!

What you look at is what you embrace. Are you looking to Jesus? Or are you looking somewhere else?

Prayer:

Father, help me to fix my eyes on Jesus. You are all I need; and He is all I need to behold!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. – 2 Cor 2:14

When we live for Christ, He “diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge [through us] in every place.” That means he will make sure there is something about us that other people intuitively notice. People will be drawn to us for the right reasons. Someone who doesn’t know you should be able to look at your life – and your faith – and say, “I don’t know what is different about him (her), but I want it.” Then we get to tell them the “difference” is Jesus!

The opposite is also true. When we live for Christ, we give off His fragrance; but when we live for the flesh, we stink! (We are the “aroma of death leading to death” according to verse 16). Genuine faith is impossible to fake. If you play the Christian game, but don’t really love Jesus with all your heart, people will sniff out the difference.

Thanks be to God that He draws other people to us, so we can draw them to Him!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for working through me. Thank You for Your light shining through me. Thank You for the distinct aroma of Your presence wafting through my life. I pray that everything I think, say, and do, would cause people to want to know You more!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. – Job 23:12

No matter how bad things got, Job refused to defy God. He did not depart from God’s commandments. Job did not despise God’s word! In fact, he treasured the word of God more than the food he needed to survive. And in the end, God would reward him for it:

Now the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning… – Job 42:12

Will you commit to craving the word of God more than food? To thirst for God’s voice more than water? Will you invite God to rearrange your priorities, so that He is everything to you?

Prayer:

God, rearrange my priorities, in Jesus’ name! I want to treasure Your word more than food. I want to thirst for Your voice more than water. I want to delight in You  more than anything else in this world!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; every hand of misery will come against him. – Job 20:22

You have a choice: will you rely on yourself, or on God? The fruit of self-sufficiency is distress; but the fruit of reliance on God is success!

Self-sufficiency doesn’t lead to peace; it leads to distress. Why waste time and energy trying to secure and protect your own future? Why not let God establish your life, instead of trying to establish it on your own?

Prayer:

Father, help me to rely on You more than ever before! I want to trust You with all of my heart, and I want to serve You with all of my life, in Jesus’ name!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But I will tarry in Ephesus until Pentecost. For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. – 1 Cor 16:8-9

New opportunities mean new enemies. New levels mean new devils! Paul rejoiced that a new and effective door of opportunity had opened wide for him; but he was certainly not ignorant of the fact that every open door presents new challenges.

Celebrate breakthrough! But don’t be surprised when opposition comes. Take it as a compliment that your effectiveness has the enemy’s attention! Be prepared, and fight from the victory Jesus has already given you on the Cross.

Prayer:

Father, I declare the enemy is powerless over me in Jesus’ name. He cannot alter the plans You have for me, and he cannot quench the effectiveness with which You have blessed me!

Day 236: So Much to Look Forward To!

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. – 1 Cor 15:42-44a

The Resurrection changes everything. Jesus died as the firsfruits (1 Cor 15:20,23). He sowed His own life into death so we could sprout from death into everlasting life! He made a way into Heaven so we could follow Him there and rest: face to face with God, for all eternity.

Your life on earth is not perfect; but your existence in heaven will be. Your earthly body is corrupt; but your heavenly body will never fail you. Your earthly heart makes mistakes; but it is impossible to make mistakes in heaven! Your earthly will may be weak, but in heaven you will lack nothing.

You have so much to look forward to: eternal life in heaven with God. Doesn’t everything else – all the trials you are experiencing now – pale in comparison?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Resurrection life! Thank You that Jesus’ death on the Cross means I get to follow in His footsteps. I could have never made it to Heaven on my own; but Jesus will take me there.

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. – Ps 38:3

Your sins are too heavy for you; so why not let Jesus carry them? He is willing. He cares for you:

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:6-7

Aren’t you tired of trying to carry your own weight? Aren’t you tired of trying to do everything yourself? Come to Jesus! He will take on everything you cannot carry. He will give you rest:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matt 11:28-30

When you turn to Jesus, He separates you from your sin, “as far as the East is from the West” (Ps 103:12). Are you ready to be free from the weight of your sin, once and for all?

Prayer:

Father, I believe in Your Son Jesus Christ! Thank You that faith in Him is all I need to be separated from my sins – forever. I am free! Thank You for Your easy yoke and your light burden, in Jesus’ name.

Day 234: How To Be A Good Friend

Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But who can withhold himself from speaking? – Job 4:2

Job’s friends just couldn’t keep quiet. They couldn’t do it! Job’s entire life was turned upside down in an instant. He lost everything he owned, and everyone he loved. So they started trying to explain Job’s suffering. They incorrectly assumed Job deserved everything that had happened to him.

But Job’s friends were wrong. Job didn’t deserve anything. It was Satan – not God – who brought on Job’s suffering; and quiet strength – not a lecture on righteousness – was what Job really needed. Job didn’t need lectures; he needed love. A good friend speaks life and encouragement in times of need, not judgment.

Do you know someone going through a tough time? Quietly bear the burden with them. Don’t try to “fix” what’s wrong; don’t even try to explain it! That is God’s work, not yours.

Prayer:

Father, help me to be a good friend! Whenever someone around me is going through a tough time, help me to respond in love, and not judgment. Help me to quietly bear the burden of their pain with them, with no questions asked!
