Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” – Josh 7:25

Under the Old Covenant, even the most honest confession was met with punishment. Achan readily confessed to Joshua that he had been disobedient: God had commanded that the Israelites take no spoil from their conquest of Jericho, but Achan had stolen several items. The non-negotiable Old Covenant response was certain death for Achan and his entire family.

Under the Old Covenant, even the smallest offense was punishable by death; but under the New Covenant, even the largest offense is redeemable with eternal life! Because Jesus Christ died for our sins, our confession is met with forgiveness. There is no sin so great that it can overshadow the finished work of the Cross.

God is faithful to forgive even our most grievous trespasses. Jesus Christ took on the punishment all of us deserve for our sins; He did it so that we could be released into an eternal life of freedom and righteousness!

We no longer have to fear confession and repentance. As God’s children, we have the privilege of boldly approaching the throne of grace, knowing that God will meet us with open arms.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace-filled response to honest repentance. I want to live my life in radical obedience to You: not because I have to, but because I get to! Thank You for the Cross!
