Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them. – Josh 9:14-15

Israel’s enemies came into their midst and asked for a treaty. The leaders of Israel should have known better! Joshua should have smelled something was wrong. But they didn’t know; because they weren’t talking to God!

When we don’t talk with God, we can’t tell when people are trying to deceive us. When we don’t listen to God, we can’t tell who is out to hurt us! If Joshua had talked to God, he would have seen right through the enemy’s trap; but because he acted before praying, he was led astray.

God is willing to warn us when the enemy is up to something; but first we have to ask, and make time to listen to His reply!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your willingness to always speak to me! Remind me to seek Your counsel, every single day of my life. Reveal to me when people are for me, and when they are against me!
