CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“But they did not ask counsel of the Lord. So Joshua made peace with them…” (Josh 9:14-15). As the Israelites invaded the city of Gibeon, their hands were tied. The inhabitants of the city had approached the elders of Israel and tricked them into entering into a covenant with them, and promising them peace. The elders, including Joshua, had been tricked because they did not ask counsel of the Lord. Whenever someone asks to be let into your life, ask God if he or she is someone He wants in your life! If you’re reading this, you probably are a compassionate person. God knows you’re compassionate, and He will put people in your life so you can help them. However, the enemy also knows you’re compassionate; he will try hard to put people in your life to distract you from your God-given purpose! So, ask God for discernment before you invest time and energy into relationships. He will not lead you astray.

Prayer:

Father, give me wisdom and discernment when it comes to who I allow into my life. I know you want all of my relationships to be blessed, and I thank You for promising me my life will be filled with good friends and family!
