Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” – Judges 6:12-13a

Gideon was minding his business when an Angel of the Lord showed up. “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” the Angel said. But Gideon didn’t believe Him! “If the Lord is with us,” he said, “Why…has all this happened to us?”

Gideon didn’t believe God was with him, because his life experience didn’t match God’s word. Gideon didn’t believe the Angel’s proclamation, because his life didn’t look like God was with him. He had to make a decision to believe what God said, even if he couldn’t see it in his life. He had to believe, even if he hadn’t experienced God’s goodness for himself!

What does God’s word say about you? Men: You are a mighty man of valor. Ladies: You are all fair, and there is no spot in you (Song 4:7)! Your life might not look it; but God’s word says it. Will you believe it?

Prayer:

Father, help me to believe what You say about me, even if I don’t feel like it’s true. I pray Your Holy Spirit would give me the confidence I need to lay hold of Your promises like never before, in Jesus’ name!
