Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. – Judges 8:32-33

Israel was following Gideon instead of God. They were following an anointed leader instead of the God who anointed the leader! So when Gideon died, Israel’s faith died with him. When Gideon was buried, Israel’s obedience was buried alongside him!

This is what happens when we follow a man instead of God. Don’t just follow a leader; follow the Leader. Pastors are great leaders; but they can’t get you to Heaven. Only Jesus can. Podcasters are great speakers; but they can’t give you the Truth. Only Jesus can!

If you follow a man or a woman, your faith will be tied to his or her life. But if you follow Jesus, you will be forever whole: mind, body and spirit. Your faith will be in Him; and Jesus never fails!

Prayer:

Father, I want to follow You and You alone! Help me never to get trapped following someone who loves You. I want to love You and follow You for myself, in Jesus’ name!
