Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb. – 1 Sam. 1:4-5

Elkanah’s love for Hannah, his wife, did not depend on what she produced. He loved her, even though she could not perform what was seen as the cultural duty of a wife at the time: to provide offspring. But none of that mattered to her husband! He gave her a “double portion.” He blessed her with more than she expected, because his love was not dependent on her performance!

Jesus loves you the same way! Jesus – your husband[1] – loves you with an everlasting love. His affection for you does not depend on what you produce. He loves you regardless of your performance! He loves you – just as Elkanah loved Hannah – because you are His.

You are enough. God loves you just the way you are! He will bless you with a double portion: not because of what you do for Him, but because of who you are to Him, in Jesus’ name.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for loving me apart from my performance. I am so grateful for your unending, never-stopping love! Whether things go well or poorly, help me to always remember that You love me, no matter what; and there is nothing I can ever do to change that.
