Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you.” – 1 Sam 20:4

Jonathan didn’t do only what was required to keep David’s friendship; he went above and beyond to make sure David was safe. Jonathan didn’t care about protecting himself, or making sure he would benefit from the relationship; he did everything he could to bless David, because David was his friend!

Real friends go above and beyond for each other. Don’t stop at what you want; strive for what your friend needs. Don’t stop at what’s convenient for you; stop at what’s life-giving to them! Jesus did it for you; and in turn, He asks you to do it for others.

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. – Jn 15:13

Prayer:

Father, make me a good friend. Help me to take my eyes off myself. I want to care about my friends more than I care about me! You have poured out over me; and now I want to pour out over them, in Jesus’ name!
