Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. – 1 Sam 24:20

David was anointed to be king. God had promised David he would be king! So when Saul walked into the cave where David was hiding to “attend to his needs” (v 3), it would have made perfect since for David to kill Saul and take the throne! David’s men encouraged him to do it. This is the day you have been waiting for, they said.

But David would not lift a finger against Saul:

And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.” – 1 Sam 24:6

David knew what we should know: how you achieve success matters. Taking the wrong road to the right destination will leave you so damaged from the journey that you won’t be able to enjoy the end result! David could have easily killed Saul and become king. But he knew it was not the right thing to do. He acted with integrity, and even Saul knew the Lord would reward him for it!

Prayer:

Father, strengthen me to do things the right way. Fill me with integrity, and cover me with grace, in Jesus’ name!
