Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. – 1 Kings 8:9

This was a big moment! King Solomon was bringing the ark of the covenant into the temple he had just built for God. The ark of the covenant housed the very presence of God. Wherever the ark went, God’s presence would go!

But look what was in the ark: nothing, “…except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb.” The only thing in the ark was God’s word, and His presence! Where God’s word is, His presence will follow. God’s message to His people was simple: all you need is 1) My word, and 2) My presence. That’s it!

Don’t overcomplicate your faith. You need two things: 1) God’s word, and 2) His presence. You cannot have one without the other; but when you have them both, you have all you will ever need!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your word. Thank You for Your presence! I want to build my life around a genuine love for Your word, and an authentic appreciation for Your presence, in Jesus’ name!
