Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. – Acts 8:30-31

This “man of Ethiopia” (v 27) was reading the prophet Isaiah, but he didn’t understand what God’s word was saying! Have you ever been in that place? You know you should read your Bible, but you just don’t understand what you’re reading? The Ethiopian eunuch needed a tutor. He needed Philip to guide him so he could understand God’s word! And you need a guide, too!

But you have a different Guide. You don’t need Philip! You have the Holy Spirit:

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” – Jn. 16:13

When you don’t understand what something in Scripture means, don’t panic! Ask the Holy Spirit for help. He will open the eyes of your understanding so you can see what Scripture says. He will make God’s word real to you so you can apply it to your life! Ask the Holy Spirit for help, and He will give you what you need.

Prayer:

Father, please help me to understand Scripture! Sometimes when I read Your word, I struggle to apply it to my life. I pray that would never be the case. Help me to know what to do with Your word every time I open it, in Jesus’ name!
