Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
He said to him, “I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (He was lying to him.) – 1 Kings 13:18

The “man of God” (v 1) had a specific word from the Lord. God sent him “from Judah to Bethel by the word of the Lord” (v 1) to prophesy against Jeroboam (the wicked king over Israel). The man of God wasn’t supposed to linger in Bethel! God told him neither to eat nor drink in Bethel, and to return home a different way than he had come (v 10).

But another “prophet” messed with his head. A man who called himself a prophet came and met the man of God as he was on his way home. “I too am a prophet,” he said. “An Angel spoke to me saying, ‘Bring him back to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water’” (v 18). So the man of God listened! But there was one problem: this so-called “prophet” was lying! God hadn’t really said anything to him at all! And as a result, the man of God’s destiny was cut short. He died on his way home because he had listened to a man who called himself a prophet instead of listening to the Spirit of the Lord.

When God speaks to you, listen to Him! Do not ever allow someone else who calls him/herself a prophet to tell you that what God is spoken to you is not true![1] Far too many people call themselves prophets in the church! You are the person God will speak to most about your destiny! And when You meet Him face to face at the end of your life, you are the one who will have to give an account to God. Did you do what He said? Did you heed His word? Did you walk out His calling on your life? And as you stand before Him, “But a man who called himself a prophet told me not to do it,” will not be an acceptable response.

You know His word. You know His will! Trust God, and go and do it.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for speaking to me! Make me confident in the way – and the accuracy with which – I hear Your voice. I will not allow anyone else’s so-called prophetic word for me to disrupt what You have spoken to me in times of prayer, in Jesus’ name!
