Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” – 1 Kings 19:4

Elijah was vehemently defending the Gospel! But not everyone loved him for it. Jezebel, King Ahab’s wife, sent Elijah a death threat: “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time” (1 Kings 19:2). I would love to tell you that in the face of that death threat, Elijah responded full of bold faith. But he didn’t. He went to the wilderness, and “prayed that he might die.”

Elijah’s response to stress wasn’t perfect! But God didn’t mind. God encouraged him. God strengthened him! God would continue to use him, right up until the day he was taken up into Heaven.

Your response to stress might not be perfect. Maybe God called you higher, but you ran the other way. That’s okay. So did Elijah. You’re in good company! Now get up, dust yourself off, and come back to Jesus. He is here; and He is ready to walk with you.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for second chances! Thank You for helping me to respond well to stress. I pray I would never back down from the calling You have on my life, in Jesus’ name!
