CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“…because we did not consult Him about the proper order” (1 Chron 15:13). When the people of Israel tried to bring the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim to Jerusalem in 1 Chron 13, something was wrong. They brought the ark on a “new cart” (1 Chron 13:7) which was driven by oxen. When one of the oxen stumbled, Uzza (a Levite) reached out his hand to stabilize the ark, and God struck him dead because of it. Why did God have such an extreme reaction? The ark was only to be carried on men’s shoulders – never pulled by oxen. Moses had received these instructions from God (Ex 25:12-14, Num 7:9), but David had forgotten them. If David and his men had remembered those instructions, calamity could have been avoided.

In the New Testament context, God will no longer strike us down for disobedience. It is important, however, that we follow His instructions exactly. We must never forget the things God has already told our spiritual fathers and mothers, but rather remember and build on them. If we follow His Word down to the smallest detail, disaster will be averted, and we can finally welcome His Presence with open arms!

Prayer:

Father, help me to be receptive and obedient to Your Word: down to the last jot and tittle! I pray that Your Holy Spirit would guide me into Truth, and that I would listen with an open heart.
