Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine.” – Gen 41:36

Joseph told Pharaoh there would be a famine; but he also told Pharaoh not to worry about the famine. God would send provision so His people could prepare. God told Joseph what was coming in advance, so that everyone could make ready.

I come from a background in finance. When I moved into ministry, my wife and I had money put away to prepare for the transition into life as a pastor. God provided – years in advance – to sustain us as we served Him full-time. In five years of ministry, we have never lacked for a thing, because we heeded God’s voice and saved when we could.

There is wisdom in planning ahead. There will be seasons of life in which everything is going well; and there will be seasons in which there is much to be desired. God invites us to use the fat times to prepare for the lean. We should never take “years of great plenty” (v 29) for granted, and assume we have reached some new normal. Instead, we should use abundance to prepare for whatever comes next.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for preparing me in advance. Thank You for blessing me with fat times, so I don’t have to worry through the lean times. Thank You for meeting my every need, in Jesus’ name!
