Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And they spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to these people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever.” But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him… – 2 Chron 10:7-8a

Rehoboam inherited the most prosperous kingdom the world had ever seen. His father, King Solomon, “…surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom” (2 Chron 9:22). The people loved King Solomon, and served him with all their hearts!

But his son, Rehoboam, made a huge mistake. He forgot to prize the people. Wise counsel spoke into his life and told him to be “kind” to the people God had put under his care (v 7); but Reheboam rejected their advice. He abused the authority God had given him, instead of using the authority for the benefit of everyone around him!

God will send people to help you with His work; but it is your responsibility to be kind to them. Rehoboam rejected the wisdom his father Solomon embodied; and as a result, he lost the kingdom in an instant. All the people who had happily served King Solomon refused to serve his son.

Do you prize the people God has put into your care?

Prayer:

Father, help me to prize people! I know You have put special people into my care. Help me to prize them: to honor them as your sons and daughters, and treat them the way you want your children to be treated!
