Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. – Rom 9:30-32

The Gentiles didn’t know how to earn righteousness; but they knew how to have faith! The Jewish people, on the other hand, knew how to earn God’s love; but they didn’t believe God loved them! Scripture says the Gentiles – the ones who believed even though they didn’t behave – captured God’s heart.

Trying to earn God’s affection – His goodness, His Forgiveness, and His favor – is a mistake. God’s affection cannot be earned! It must simply be received. Jesus died for you to have God’s love; and when you believe in Jesus, you have it! You are forgiven and made perfect in Him!

When we forget that God’s love is a gift, and try to work for His affection, we get stuck. Scripture says trying to work for God’s love is a “stumbling stone:” it messes up our walk! Don’t stumble! Never forget: He loves you because you believe, not because you’re well-behaved!

Prayer:

Father, help me to remember that I don’t have to earn Your love. Jesus died so I could have it for free, when I believe in You. Help me to believe and trust in You, like never before, in Jesus’ name!
