Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. – 1 Cor. 9:27

Paul preached the Gospel everywhere he went, He shared the revelation that Jesus is Lord. He led people into salvation by introducing them to Jesus, who forgives all your sin and heals all your diseases (Ps. 103:3). But just because Paul was a preacher didn’t mean he could throw discipline out the window! He “disciplined his body” (v. 27) all the more. He led by example! Paul didn’t do what Paul wanted to do; he did what God wanted Paul to do so that more people could be saved!

Discipline is not a curse word. It is not something we should shy away from! Discipline creates freedom. Discipline ensures that we are divinely positioned to receive everything God has for us. Discipline crucifies the desires of the flesh, and activates the desires of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul was a man of discipline. And so should you and I be.

Follow Jesus! Stay the course. Don’t look from the path God has for you. Discipline your body and reject the desires of the flesh so that you can receive the full reward that comes with serving at Jesus’ feet.

Prayer:

Father, help me to love discipline! Help me to beat back the desires of the flesh so that I can walk in the fullness of the calling You have on my life. I want everything Jesus died for me to have, in Jesus’ name!
