Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. – 1 Cor 10:14

Paul tells us we must flee from two sins: sexual immorality (1 Cor 6:18), and idolatry (1 Cor 10:14). Both are especially poisonous, in that they distract us from wholehearted worship of God. God wants to be the only god in our lives; and sexual fulfillment or any other form of idolatry will interfere with true worship. Therefore, we must not only avoid, but actually flee, this type of sin.

So how do we flee? Scripture isn’t just saying we should push sin away, as we would a plate of food when we’ve had our fill. To flee is the Greek pheugo (Strong’s G5343), which means, “to be saved by flight.” What we flee from is less important than to Whom we are fleeing.  We flee by running to the foot of the Cross. We flee by reaching out to Jesus. When we draw near to God, He draws near to us (Jas 4:8)!

Don’t just flee from sin; flee to the Cross!

Prayer:

Father, help me – strengthen me – to flee from idolatry. I want to worship You with my whole heart! Help me to do it, in Jesus’ name.
