Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. – 1 Cor 14:1

Every New Testament Christian is called to live a prophetic lifestyle. Living a prophetic lifestyle starts with the desire to exercise the spiritual gift of prophecy. Would you believe that God has already given you everything you need to prophesy?

Up until Jesus, John the Baptist was the greatest prophet to ever live. However, because we are filled with the Holy Spirit, “…he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he” (Lk 7:28). Because you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you are a greater prophet than John the Baptist! You have the supernatural ability to hear accurately from Heaven.

Note that exercising the gift of prophecy is different than occupying the office of a prophet. God “…gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers…” (Eph 4:11), and there are a select few men and women who have been called specifically to devote their lives to prophetic ministry. The gift of prophecy, however, should be exercised by all New Testament believers, because we are all filled with God’s Holy Spirit!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for filling me with Your Holy Spirit. Help me to prophecy: to accurately receive Your word and proactively share Your will with other people. Cultivate in me an earnest desire to prophecy, in Jesus’ name!
