Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
A lamp is despised in the thought of one who is at ease; it is made ready for those whose feet slip. – Job 12:5

“Lamp” can be translated “disaster.” Job is pointing out that a disaster – or a really tough situation – is often despised by one who is at ease. When we’re doing well, it’s easy to despise – to judge or even simply pass right by – those who are experiencing crisis. When we’re doing well, it’s easy to just not care if people around us are experiencing pain.

But you’re better than that! No matter how well you’re doing: stop and care. When someone tells you what they’re going through, stop and care. Take a moment to listen, and a minute to pray. When someone tells you how much they’re hurting, stop and care. Give a word of encouragement: even a hug or a high five!

There are people in your life who are going through a tough time and need a word of encouragement. Are you ready to give them one?

Prayer:

Father, make me an encourager. I want to bless the people around me with a hug, a smile, and an encouraging word! Remind me to stop and care, in Jesus’ name.
