Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us… – 2 Cor 1:9-10

When you become a Christian, it doesn’t mean your life will be easy. Your conversion doesn’t guarantee you will never suffer again. Paul and Timothy didn’t want the early church to be ignorant of the fact that suffering exists, even for Christians. In fact, they honestly admitted their suffering had been so great that they “despaired even of life” (v 9).

However, they saw purpose in their suffering. Their suffering made them trust God more.

God will deliver you from suffering when you trust in Him. It is important to know that God does not cause suffering: for if He caused both suffering and deliverance from suffering, He would be divided, and a house divided cannot stand (Mk 3:25). Suffering comes from Satan, and deliverance comes from God. God will, however, work good through your suffering.

Trust God! He will deliver you from suffering. He is never the Originator of suffering, but He always promises to work good through everything you experience, for His glory.

Prayer:

Father, strengthen me to trust in You more than ever! You are the God Who Delivers, and I will trust in You. I know You work all things together for good, in Jesus’ name.
