Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us… – 2 Cor 1:9-10

How can you trust God like never before?

Paul was a man who trusted God. He admits to the church at Corinth that his life with Jesus was not always easy. He was so persecuted in Asia that he “despaired even of life” (v 8). Yet no matter what he went through, he trusted God. What gave Paul such confidence? How did he maintain such resolve?

He focused on the Cross. Look at verses 9 and 10 above. He had a death sentence; but he knew any suffering he experienced would cause him to look to God more, not less. He was confident that God raises the dead, because he knew Jesus face to face! He knew that because he believed in Jesus, he would never see death. And if God had already delivered Paul from death itself, how much easier would it be for God to deliver him from any obstacle he would ever face in life?

Whatever you’re going through: God “does” deliver. Whatever you will go through in the future: God “will still” deliver. God is the Deliverer! Whatever mess you find yourself in, He is the way out!

Prayer:

Father, help me to take my eyes off my seemingly-unanswered prayers. You are the Deliverer. When You raised Jesus from the dead, You answered my every prayer. Help me to look to You, knowing that the more I focus on Jesus, the more my life will be filled with answered prayer!
