Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. – Eccl 2:11

Solomon was rich! He had “gardens and orchards” (v 5), and “male and female servants” (v 7). He had “greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were [before him]” (v 7). He had “silver and gold and the special treasures of kings” (v 8)! But none of it made him happy.

Solomon was desperately searching for fulfillment. But he didn’t find fulfillment in material things. He had it all; but none of it made him happy. Everything he acquired was “vanity” and “grasping for the wind” (v 11).

What a shame it would be to spend your whole life thinking more money will make you happy, only to find out it doesn’t make a difference in the end! Jesus – not money – is the One who truly satisfies. Without Him, there is no fulfillment; but in Him, there is fullness of life!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for fullness of life! I am fulfilled in You. I am alive in You! Help me not to spend one more moment chasing after things that won’t make a difference when I am dead and gone. I want to pursue You with my whole heart, in Jesus’ name!
