Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. – 2 Cor 11:2

Scripture commands us not to envy others (Ex 20:17); yet here Paul says he is jealous for the early church with a godly jealousy. How can jealousy be godly?

Godly jealousy and human jealousy are very different emotions. Human jealousy comes from a place of fear, and wants to take what others have. Godly jealousy, on the other hand, comes from a place of love, and wants to give what others need! God is jealous for you (Ex 20:5). He loves you so much that He gave His Only Son as a sacrifice for your sin. He loves you perfectly, and wants to give you eternal life! Knowing that God is jealous for you, your natural response should be godly jealousy for others, instead of human jealousy of others.

To be jealous means to “burn with zeal” (Strong’s G2206). Paul loved the early church with such passion that he would stop at nothing to make sure they understood the gospel! Are you jealous for your friends and family with a godly jealousy?

Prayer:

Father, help me to passionately share the Gospel with the men and women You have put in my life. Help me to burn with passionate love for other people, just as You burn with passion for me!
