Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven. – Prov. 23:4-5

New Yorkers work hard. In fact, a 2018 study found that New Yorkers work more hours every week than every other city in the country.[1] Hard work is a good thing! But did you know there are good reasons to work hard, and bad reasons to work hard?

Scripture gives us one reason to avoid: “Do not overwork to be rich.” We should work hard to serve God. We should work hard to love others! But we should never work hard to avoid having to trust God to meet our material needs.

Why are you working so hard? God will provide for you. He will bless you! Whatever your financial goals are: bring them to God, and ask Him to position you for divine favor as only He can!

The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it. – Prov 10:22

Prayer:

Father, I like to work hard! But I want to work hard for the right reasons. Thank You that hard work is a blessing, in Jesus’ mighty name!
