Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing. – 2 Cor. 12:11

Paul should have been “commended.” He should have been honored by the members of the church at Corinth! But instead, he was disrespected. So he reminded the Corinthians who he was. They threw him off his game! He boasted of the “signs and wonders and mighty deeds” (v. 12) God had accomplished in him. But the more he boasted, the more he “became a fool.”

When you speak highly of yourself, not only do you look foolish; you actually become more foolish. Why? Because your thoughts follow your words. As you boast in yourself, you start to think more highly of yourself. You start to look to yourself instead of God. You start to think you have the answers instead of trusting Him for the answers. What could be more foolish than that?

The remedy is not to self-deprecate; it is to boast in God. You don’t have to belittle yourself! But you should brag on God. Because if boasting in yourself makes you a fool, boasting in God makes you wise.

Prayer:

Father, I will boast in You and You alone. You are God! And I am far from it. Help me to look to You and never to myself. Help me to boast in You and never in myself, in Jesus’ name!
