Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel; but they did not heed Moses, because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage.- Ex. 6:9

God was speaking to His people. He reminded them that He was faithful! He would deliver them from the Egyptians into the Promised Land. But His people didn’t believe Moses when he relayed the message. Why? Because of emotional interference. Scripture notes the causes of 1) anguish of spirit and 2) cruel bondage. Those two elements hindered the ability of God’s people to receive His word and His promises over their lives!

“Anguish of spirit” can also be translated as impatience.[1] When God promises something great to you, are you willing to wait? The Hebrew people didn’t see it with their eyes, so they refused to believe it with their heart. Don’t live your life that way! When you believe it with your heart first, God will make sure you see it with your eyes.

Cruel bondage refers to your emotional response to the weight you carry. You have responsibilities and struggles in life! But do not allow your perception of reality to dictate your willingness to take God at His Word. Don’t get tired and frustrated thinking your life will never change! Our God moves mountains! He raises the dead! He parts seas! And He will do what He has promised to do in your life.

Say no to emotional interference. Say yes to great faith that perseveres against all odds. Do not let anguish of spirit and cruel bondage interfere with the word of God for your life! Whatever He says: simply receive.

Prayer:

Father, I receive Your word in Jesus’ name! I pray You would remove any and all emotional interference to accepting Your word. I say yes to Your promise! And I am making a decision today to take You at Your Word.
