Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Behold, I will send for many fishermen,” says the Lord, “and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.” – Jer 16:16

God is talking here about restoring His people. He would “bring them back into their land which [He] gave to their fathers” (Jer 16:15). And as part of the restorative process, God’s people would have two responsibilities:

1) Fishing. We are familiar with this one. We are to be “fishers of men” (Matt 4:19). We are to partner with God to expand His Kingdom by telling people who do not know Jesus about Him!

2) Hunting. This is the role with which we are less 1) familiar and 2) comfortable. We are to hunt: to aggressively root out the work of the enemy in our lives, and snuff his influence. Do not give the enemy a foothold! Aggressively identify the areas in your life where sin exists, and ask the Holy Spirit to remove it. What is coming between you and God? As a “hunter:” kill that thing!

Your work for the Kingdom is not only offensive; it is also defensive. Fishing expands God’s territory into new hearts; and hunting preserves the territory He already has!

Prayer:

Father, I accept my responsibility as both fisher and hunter. Thank You for calling me to be one who expands, and also one who defends! I will preach the Gospel everywhere I go; and I will rebuke the enemy in Jesus’ name!
