Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you— – Titus 1:5

The early church was growing rapidly. Paul had instructed Titus to stay in Crete while Paul continued to travel. Why? So that Titus would “set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city.” Paul started the work! But he knew it would not flourish if he tried to do everything himself. So Titus’ tasks were to set up 1) organizational structure and 2) healthy leadership that would allow the early church to flourish and grow.

If it won’t run without you in it, you need to do a better job. This applies to your job (especially you, small business owners!). This applies to your family. This especially applies in church! If something you are a part of will not function without you there in the flesh, you have not done a good job of empowering other people to lead in your absence. Healthy leaders empower leaders, instead of consolidating power.

Lead like Jesus. Set it up, empower others, and then go to the Cross.

Prayer:

Father, I want to lead like Jesus! I want to lead like Paul. You have put men and women all around me who are capable leaders in their own right. Help me to train, empower, and trust them, in Jesus’ name!
