Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord… – Heb. 12:14

Do you want to “see” the Lord? “See” is the Greek optanomai (Strong’s G3700), which means “to look at, to behold, and to allow one’s self to be seen.” To “see” the Lord, then, doesn’t mean to strive, reach, and try to see Him on your own. It doesn’t mean to work for an encounter with Jesus! It means to simply invite Him to occupy your field of vision in the way you live your life. The way that you nurture life-changing encounters with Jesus is by “pursuing peace with all people, and holiness.” In other words, it is the simple things that produce regular encounters with the living God!

Encounters with Jesus should be the norm, not the exception. Pursue peace with other people. Cast out sin from your life and pursue holiness! And as you do the simple things, He will make His presence well known. Without peace and holiness, it is impossible to “see” the Lord; but with them, life-changing encounters will become your everyday experience with Christ.

Prayer:

Father, help me to do the simple things well. Calm my emotions and help me to pursue peace with the people around me. Suppress the urges of my flesh and strengthen me to pursue holiness! I want to see You more than ever before, like never before, in Jesus’ name.
