Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. – Ps. 118:1

Mercy is a gift from God. Mercy looks at your past and says you won’t get the bad things you deserve for your sin. Admit it: you’re far from perfect! “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). And that means you deserve eternal punishment for your sins: “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (Jas. 2:10).

But thank God for His mercy! His mercy means that because Jesus suffered an eternity of punishment in your place on the cross, there is no more punishment left for you! The wrath of God has been poured out; and all that’s left for you when you’re hidden in Christ is love. And our verse today says that God’s mercy endures forever! There is no expiration date!

There is no statute of limitations in the courts of Heaven. There is no time limit in which God can still get back at you for the things you’ve done wrong! The moment you receive Jesus as Lord, all of your sins are forgiven: separated from you “as far as the east is from the west” (Ps. 103:12). Aren’t you glad there is no limit to His mercy? Aren’t you thankful that His mercy “endures forever:” from not into eternity?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your mercy! I am so grateful that Your mercy never runs out and never expires. Help me to wake up every morning thankful that Your mercies are new and they never run out, in Jesus’ name!
