Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy” (Ps 147:11). God’s people should have a healthy fear of Him. There is, however, such a thing as an unhealthy fear of God. So what’s the difference?

A healthy fear of God from a place of confidence in God’s ability to perform His word. It is reverential and worshipful, and based on God’s omnipotence. An unhealthy fear of God, on the other hand, comes from a place of shame in our inability to perform everything we desire to do. The former is based on God’s far-reaching ability; the latter focuses on our own shortcomings. Which fear of God drives you?

“But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared” (Ps 130:4).

Prayer:

Father, I want to fear You in a healthy way. I want my Godly fear to be one based on reverence and respect; never shame. Mold me into a child of Yours who truly understands how forgiven I am!
