Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. But the flesh of the bull, with its skin and its offal, you shall burn with fire outside the camp… – Ex 29:13-14a

God is not interested in behavior modification; He wants heart transformation. Even as God instructs Moses to properly make an offering on the altar according to Old Covenant law, we see a foreshadowing of our New Covenant relationship with God.

The priests were instructed to take the fat – the richest and best part of the animal – and burn it on the altar. They were to also take the kidneys – a Biblical representation of the seat of our emotions and innermost desires – and burn them on the altar. God wanted the insides – the innermost parts – of the sacrificial animal offered up to Him. But all the outsides were to be taken outside the camp and burned with fire.

God doesn’t want your outsides; He wants your heart! His desire is not for empty outward demonstrations of affection, but for inward commitment and devotion to Him. How holy you appear to other people does not matter one bit; loving God with all your heart is His only desire!

Prayer:

Father, I give You my whole heart today, in Jesus’ name. I receive Jesus as Lord over my life, and I accept the heart transformation He died for me to have!
