Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. – Ex 34:21

Rest is important. One of God’s first commandments to His people was to keep the Sabbath. In Exodus 35:2, Moses told the people of Israel that whoever did work on the Sabbath, “…shall be put to death.” The Sabbath was of the utmost importance then; and it still is now.

You need times of rest to function at peak capacity in times of stress. Under the Old Covenant, God’s people were invited into a day of rest. However, under our New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ, we are invited into a lifestyle of rest. We get to rest, knowing that God rescued us from the depth of our sin, charged the punishment we deserve to Jesus, and baptized us in His righteousness. We get to rest, knowing that when we die, we will see God face to face, and the words He speaks over us will be, “You are My beloved child, in whom I am well pleased!”

Make time for rest. The Sabbath was made for man; not man for the Sabbath (Mk 2:27). Ask God to help you carve out space for rest in your life – every day – so that you can be recharged, refreshed, and ready to do all things through Christ who strengthens you!

Prayer:

Father, remind me to rest. I know I need rest to function well. I know the way I received salvation is by resting in the finished work of the Cross. I don’t want to try and solve all my problems on my own anymore; I know that as I rest, You will work perfection through me!
