Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. – Ps. 34:14

What you leave is just as important as what you pursue. Seek peace! Pursue Jesus with all your heart. But also: depart from evil. Leave your old life behind, and be free from your past in Jesus’ name!

When you give your life to Jesus, everything changes:

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. – Rom. 8:2

You are no longer subject to the “law of sin and death.” You are no longer bound by sickness and disease; instead, your portion is divine healing. You are no longer victim to the bottomless pull and temptation of sin; instead, your portion is perfect freedom in every area of your life! Jesus came to take captivity captive (Eph. 4:8)! He came to set the captives free (Isaiah 61:1). And because you have Him, wickedness no longer has any hold on you.

Seek Jesus and depart from evil. Leave your old life behind! And your portion in this world will be “newness of life.”

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. – Rom. 6:1-4

Prayer:

Father, I pray You would fill me with a desire to pursue Jesus like never before! I also pray You would fill me with the strength and conviction required to depart from evil permanently. Death no longer has a hold over me. I am leaving my old life behind, in Jesus’ name!
